Harmony is a not-for-profit organization that trains college and graduate
student musicians to teach music to underprivileged young people. Harmony’s
student-instructors receive professional development training, an hourly
stipend for their teaching services, and often course or work-study
credit from their partnering schools. Harmony’s beginner musicians
receive musical instruments, music instruction, music books, supplies,
and tickets to cultural events, all at little or no cost.
The dual objective of Harmony is simultaneously to develop a new generation
of music students and music instructors. In doing so, Harmony seeks
to fulfill the larger social mission of expanding access among under-served
communities to music education and the creativity, self-confidence,
discipline, and teamwork it engenders.
