Harmony develops instrumental music ability and music appreciation in under-served young people by matching them in small instructional groups with student-teachers from local colleges and universities. In addition to music lessons, students receive instruments, books, music supplies, and tickets to cultural events, all at little or no cost. The dual objective of the program is simultaneously to develop a new generation of music students and music instructors. In doing so, Harmony seeks to fulfill the larger social mission of expanding access among under-served populations to music education and the creativity, self-confidence, discipline, and teamwork it engenders. The success of the Harmony program depends, in large part, on the talent and commitment of the student-teachers we select from colleges and universities in New York City. Harmony instructors must be dedicated to their roles as teachers and mentors to our young students all of whom have little or no experience studying music. Our teachers are expected to demonstrate professionalism by appearing for lessons on time, preparing lesson plans in accordance with the Harmony curriculum, and monitoring the individual progress of their students. In exchange for their hard work our instructors find satisfaction in their professional development as music teachers and are inspired by the excitement and appreciation of our Harmony students and families. Additionally, instructors are compensated by the hour for their teaching services. Participation in Harmony is competitive and we are careful to choose the most promising candidates. We are pleased that you have expressed an interest in working with us, and we hope you will take the time to answer the following questions. This information will help us to ensure a variety of instrumental choices for our young people; will give us a sense of your teaching and performance history; and will help us gauge your availability and flexibility in terms of program placement.
